Yahoo! shuttering Yahoo! Auctions
23 May 2007Yahoo told AuctionBytes that they would be closing down the Yahoo! Auctions as of June 16th.
Yahoo Auctions will no longer accept listings as of June 3, 2007, on the US and Canadian sites, which will close on June 16, 2007. The last day to bid or buy is June 16, 2007, and users will be able to access their accounts through October 29, 2007.
Listings will not auto re-submit after June 3, 2007, and as of May 4th, Auctions Scheduler and Auto Resubmit features will no longer be available.
I think this shows a pretty good sign of just how big and powerful the eBay monster really is. If any of the up and coming auction sites had a true chance of succeeding against eBay, it may have been Yahoo!. The only other one that can even come close is Amazon, but they are more of a marketplace than an auction site.
Of course, there are plenty of competitors left, it’s just that none of them seem really big enough to take any market share away any time soon. With the increase of dissatisfied eBayers, we could begin seeing a shift if one of them starts taking off. They may even get to play David to eBay’s Goliath. Maybe.

But don’t you think the problem is getting customers to flock to the other sites? No matter how many dissatisfied sellers go, it’s not just us selling to each other, and I’m not sure enough sellers could move all at once to get the buyers to notice. It might just make the marketplace momentarily better for the sellers that stayed. Or am I missing something?
