Selling books on eBay

Posted by thatedeguy on 4th October , 2006 - no responses

I’m a bit of a book addict.  I like to read and have a decent collection of collectable books in my bookshelves and like to find new ones at sales.  I’ve tried to buy and sell collectable books on eBay and had very little luck with it.  Aside from a few easy ones that I knew were hard to find, I have lost money on pretty much every other old/collectable book I’ve tried.

I have however, made a fair bit of money on books of the non-fiction variety.  CookBooks, Sewing, crochet, etc…  And also on kids books.  The kids books are more hit and miss.

Skip McGrath, a leader in the field of advice on eBay had this to say on buying and selling used books on eBay:

Unless you are an expert, forget about novels, literature and rare expensive books. Any used book store owner will tell you their daily bread & butter is non-fiction books on art, antiques, collectibles, photography, crafts, cooking, history, regional subjects, sports, cars, trains, motorcycles, music and children’s books. The same is true on eBay. You can buy plenty of these books at garage sales, flea markets, and thrift stores.

Excellent advice to the budding book seller.  I have learned some of that the hard way, but still make a few “rookie” mistakes with books from time to time. The most valuable advice that I can give to a budding book seller is to be sure to do a lot of research before I you dabbling in the book selling art.
