How to “sell” your items
28 September 2006It doesn’t matter where you do your auctions. It can be eBay, eBid, Wagglepop or any number of other sites that are springing up. One thing that they all have in common is the successfull sellers know how to sell. You may be thinking “duh, they wouldn’t be successfull if they didn’t sell.” I don’t mean they know how to sell an item. I mean they know how to sell someone on an item. Think cousing Eddie the used car salesman. Everyone who leaves the dealership with a car from cousin Eddie wonders how they got that far. All they wanted to do was browse.
What cousin Eddie knows is that selling is an active thing. If all he did was let the cars speak for themselves out on the lot, he wouldn’t sell hardly any cars.
But cousin Eddie knows how to sell the person on the car. Make them want the car.
It works the same in the online auction business. Sure, you can sell things if you just list them, but you could make more on each item and sell more items if you truly start selling them.
How? Begin with your title. Make it concise and detailed. Don’t waste valuable title space on filler words like “the”, “and”, etc…
But your description is where you really sell an item. Be detailed and ask for the sale. Use active buying phrases like:
- Don’t wait! Buy it now before it’s too late!
- Limited Supply, Buy it now before they’re all gone!
- Buy it Now and get $x.xx off of shipping!
- Buy it now and get free shipping!
Give the buyer a reason to buy. Even if it isn’t all that great of a reason. Use this tactic several times throughout the listing. Certain phrases like those that offer free shipping and discounts can become regular specials in your auctions and can create repeat buyers.
It also can pay to use active descriptors. Instead of “green glass vase”, you could use “Brilliant green glass vase”. Make the item flashy. The best sellers can make a dirt ball into a golden nugget. Or, the best sellers could sell ice to eskimos.
You can learn to be a great seller. All it takes is some trial and error and practice and you’ll be selling your buyers on your items instead of selling your items to buyers.
