Inc. is reporting that the number of sole proprietorships grew by over 1 million between 2003 and 2004. The usage of eBay is claimed as one of the leading factors for that growth.
An individual working alone can create a global businesses using eBay,” Pires added. “Sellers can turn over their inventory much faster. They get their money instantly so they can send goods immediately. They no longer have to wait to receive a check and the check to clear before they send their goods.
Obviously, this information is a little old, but I can’t see why that growth would not have continued from there. It would be interesting to see how that growth would fluctuate on a month to month basis to see if the fee hikes have affected it any. I don’t think that’s possible as most sole proprietorships are on a yearly basis so the dropoff wouldn’t show until 2007.
It would also be of interest to see how many actual sole proprietorships are active. What I mean by that is how many of them are actively doing business and how many were created but never did any reported business.
