Dutch museum liquidating art through eBay

The Dutch national museums are putting up about 1000 articles of the national art collection on eBay from now to October.

Between now and October 1,000 works of art, at the rate of 50 a week, will by auctioned on eBay.

Raymakers said the government was not looking to make money from the artworks but to get them off the state’s hands.

“What counts is that the works will have a new home,” she said.

The ICN will also have a more traditional sale at The Hague auction house Venduehuis for the 300 best lots in October.

“It is a test so we can draw lessons from it for similar sales in future,” Raymakers said, adding that another 3,000 objects could be sold through eBay at a later date.

It seems like more and more government entities are beginning to see the benefit of reaching a worldwide audience through the power of the internet. Some use eBay, while others use state sites for it. Either way, it’s a great way for these entities to get a little more money out of their assets. Of course, in many cases, it would be better if they paid a little less for them too. ;)
