Tests of a new Buy It Now format are going on now in eBay Motors. The new format makes Buy It Now a semi-persistent option. They are planning on testing several options for the option that should end up being pretty good for the market.
Over the next few months, we’re going to be testing a number of variations of the rules for how long the BIN option will stay available on a listing. For example, we may start with a rule that the BIN option will remain available on the listing until the bidding reaches 50% of the BIN amount. This rule could be modified with a different percentage over the course of our testing. Other variations could include keeping the BIN available until a certain amount of time is left in the listing, or until a certain amount of bids have been placed.
I can’t tell you how many times I’ve gotten emails asking what I would sell an item for BIN after it’s received a bid. In many cases, the BIN would have been more than what the item ended up selling for. I look forward to having one of the variations become available on our core auction listings. We almost always list with a BIN and a BIN in this manner would allow for a sale at the full price more often.
