Are You Ready for the Holidays?

10 September 2007

Believe it or not, now is the time to start preparing for the holiday season. Getting an early start now can keep things a little more sane during a time when things can seem the exact opposite. The more organized and prepared you are now, the more efficiently you can manage yourself later. It’s also a great time to start doing some research into products that might be worth sourcing.

For many, the holiday shopping season doesn’t start until the day after Thanksgiving. The day commonly referred to as “Black Friday.” That leaves about 45 days to prepare and get ready for sales to skyrocket.

But sales can’t skyrocket if you have last years cool toy, or must have gadget. You’ve got to have the toys or gadgets that will be popular this year. Sometimes, that item can be a bit of a surprise (remember the “tickle-me-elmo”?) but often, you can pick a few items that are sure winners. Take the recently newsworthy iPhone. Certain to be a hot item in several venues this holiday season. What about toys? Toys are increasingly difficult and demand a great amount of research into release schedules and current trends.

There are always seasonal items as well. It’s a good time to be listing Halloween costumes for instance. Turkey basters, injection kits and fryers will be getting hotter and hotter as October turns into November. And you can’t go wrong with most Christmas related items like tree ornaments, lights, wrapping paper, tape, and just about every decoration.

No matter what you sell, or how you sell it there is no question that the next several months will make your sales year. Many of the big boxes openly admit that it takes until November to start making a profit. The secret (It’s not really a secret is it?) is that you have to do your research and prepare for the season or you’ll get left in the dust.
